Documents to Go Goes Premium, Adds PowerPoint, Gmail Support for iPhone

Documents to Go Premium

Documents to Go with Exchange Attachments is all grown up, has changed its name to Documents to Go Premium [$14.99 - iTunes link], and now offers support for PowerPoint and Gmail attachments for iPhone and iPod touch:

  • Edit and create Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentations
  • Edit/add bullets and text in Outline mode (changes reflected immediately in Slide view)
  • Edit/add speaker notes
  • Sort/add/dupe/delete slides
  • Edit/view Gmail attachments

About the only thing missing is a dedicated, multi-app accessible file repository on the iPhone akin to what the photo app does for images. Get working on that, would you Apple?

Meanwhile, it’s a free update for existing users so if you buy it or just upgrade it, and you try out Docs to Go’s new PowerPoint or Gmail features, let us know how they work for you!

Nexus One Catch-up

nexus-one-1

We’ve not actually covered the Nexus One very much yet and there’s been sooo much written about it I’m not even going to start trying to cover everything in as much detail as has already been done.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the internet recently, the Nexus One is the long rumored “Google Phone” (maybe). The device is to be sold directly by Google at google.com/phone (not yet active), supported by T-Mobile (US) but is actually produced by HTC. Prices are suggested to be $530 SIM free or $180 with a whacking great $79.99 per month T-Mobile 24 month contract!

After being given out to Google employees the Nexus One began to make a flurry of appearances all over the web and quite often via Twitter but the glimpses were often frustratingly brief and unclear and much information was continued hype from the old Google Phone rumour mill. Thankfully though things have since become much clearer with full specs revealed confirming the obvious 1GHz Snapdragon processor along with 512MB RAM and a 3.7″ WVGA AMOLED screen.

Most recently we have seen an in depth 10 minute video and a stunning display of the Nexus One’s 3D graphic capabilities. Just look at the speed of it, this is where Android phones are really stepping into gear and those old 528MHz Qualcomm’s go from feeling a little dated to looking pre-historic! The 3D graphics speak for themselves and need no comment!

So when can you get one? Well Google are holding an “Android  press gathering” on the 5th of January 2010 and rumours suggest that orders for the handset will be taken from that date. The conference gathering will certainly be one to keep an eye on but it’s almost certain that the initial sales will be to the US only, we can just hope that Google don’t hang around too long in bringing this to Europe!

Which brings me back round to Sony Ericsson! We know all about their much anticipated Xperia X10 and when it was announced there wasn’t really much solid competition for it’s Snapdragon power but that has changed. Not only are Sony Ericsson likely to be late with their handset, they will now almost certainly be releasing AFTER this behemoth from Google/HTC. The X10 will not be the first high profile Snapdragon Android device to market, it also doesn’t look like it will match the sheer speed of the Nexus One and as of yet it isn’t even going to be running Eclair 2.0 or Flan 2.1. So what fate for Sony Ericsson’s great Android hope, well it is prettier and has some fantastic UI mods but if they come along with sluggishness and bugs that SE have struggled to eliminate in their other products then this could spell trouble ahead!

Fox News “Confirms” Rumored Jan 26 Apple Event, Focusing on “Mobility”

Fox News’ Clayton Morris is upping the ante on the rumored January 26 Apple Media Event, not only saying it’s the real deal, but that it will focus on “mobility”:

I’ve spoken to a source inside Apple who confirmed a “big” event for January. While nothing official has been handed down from the notoriously tight-lipped company, my source took the Financial Times report one step further by saying this event will focus on the mobility space, meaning we’ll see something related to the iPhone/iPod touch product line.

An earlier than usual iPhone 4.0 preview to give developers time to go resolution-independent for an iPhone HD? A camera-toting iPod touch to p!$$ off everyone who got the camera-less version for Xmas? An announcement that Apple is taking itself fully to the cloud? Or just some iTablet/iSlate the entire interwebs have been gossiping about for years?

If you’ve Quantum Leap’ed or flashback’ed from this fictional future, let us know!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

One more update for Ovi Contacts before the year turns
posted by: Blog feed for Beta Labs in Nokia on 12 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

Written by Kristian Luoma, Ovi Contacts

Hey all,

We felt that it was imperative to give still one more update for the Ovi Contacts during this year. Since our last update some issues were raised up in the Beta Labs forums that we were able to make fix. We thought you might enjoy an update, so here's one more for this year: a new and better release of Ovi Contacts for S60 3rd Edition FP2 and S60 5th Edition products.

To name a few from the long list of solved issues, here's a few worth mentioning:

  • Send file was working only from chat view, not from the friend list before, but now it works
  • Issues with Cyrilic and Scandinavian letters were fixed (you may have seen these as broken letters in the friend list)
  • E-mail field in 'My profile' didn't accept "-" character is fixed, as reported by deekay304 in the forum
  • Corrupted pics in personal and friends profile are fixed, as reported by lebb53 in the forum

Also something that was highly requested by many Spanish speaking friends of ours was that we'd put the download up to Beta Labs in a way that it contains all languages supported. Now it should.

In addition, we had time to do one more feature from the list you provided in return for your feature suggestion. Simple feature for combining all your sent messages in to a "single bubble" instead of many "subsequent bubbles" was suggested by alsiladka in the forum. Basically, it makes better use of the screen real-estate while you exchange a lot of messages. I think it looks much better. Here's how it appears:

You've all been very active in the Beta Labs Forum - commenting on things, suggesting new features and reporting bugs during this year. We are all very grateful for your input and hope to get the same support also during next year!

Thanks again!

Br, Kristian

P.s. note that the mobile download services (i.e. http://contacts.ovi.com/dist/app) will not contain these new releases and fixes mentioned - you'll only be able to download the package from http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-contacts for now.

Some goodies for Java ME developers
posted by: moderator in Mobile Tech on 12 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

If you’re a Java ME developer on our Symbian platforms, you will probably be interested in some goodies posted to the Wiki recently:

Now the Java ME interface to the API Bridge is available: http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/J2ME_Api_Bridge_Interface. If you don’t know what that thing is, please take a look at this: http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/APIBridge_Web_Runtime_API.

Essentially, the API Bridge is a way to extend the capabilities of a certain runtime. For example, by making file upload available to Web Runtime widgets and Flash Lite applications. The Java ME interface brings some of these services to MIDlets. The first wave contains:

  • Call log
  • Location
  • Media Management Service
  • NewFileService

More services are being planned and will be released pretty soon. Take a look at it and contribute feedback by saying how else you’d like to extend our runtimes through the API Bridge. We’re listening!

Former Chief Chinese Googler Leaks iTablet/iSlate Gossip?
posted by: Rene Ritchie in Mobile Tech on 12 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

iTablet Concept

According to former chief Chinese Googler, Lee Kai-fu, who apparently is well connected with Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn, the upcoming iTablet/iSlate looks like a giant iPhone with:

  • an awesome UI packed in a beautiful 10.1-inch screen
  • 3D graphics,
  • virtual keyboard,
  • video conferencing,
  • e-books,
  • Internet and other functions

All this from a connected friend, discussed in his Chinese language post [Google translate link]. Oh, and Apple expects to produce 10 million of them in the first year.

Happy kindling for the fires of rumor, indeed!

OnLive Streaming Gaming Shows off iPhone Use
posted by: Rene Ritchie in Mobile Tech on 12 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

OnLive on iPhone

As part of OnLive’s intent to stream you your Crysis Wars over the internet (rather than on physical media like a DVD or Blu Ray), they’ve put together a 48 minute demo, including the use of their companion iPhone app. The iPhone part starts at 19:30 in, and they say latency over current 3G networks is still too high, but WiFi isn’t bad (though the controls are “kinda funky”).

The more interesting part of the iPhone experience, they claim, is the spectating stuff. We’d disagree. But what do you think? Do you want to get your video games streaming from a cloud server, rented like streaming Netflix rather than owned like traditional media? Let us know!

(Note: no iPhone friendly video, but we embedded the Viddler version, on the frame where the iPhone talk starts, below the fold).

ProSwitcher Multitasking App for the iPhone
posted by: Sebastien in Iphone on 12 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

I can’t remember the last time I was so excited about a jailbreak app. Maybe it was for Action Menu, or for mQuickDo? I’m not sure, but what I know is that ProSwitcher has radically changed the way I use my iPhone.

ProSwitcher is a multitasking app for the iPhone that kinda replicates the Palm Pre “cards” feature by adding a very nice UI to Backrounder, the jailbreak app that allows you to run apps in the background.

I never was a fan of Backgrounder. Having to close the app to launch another one kinda defeated the purpose. But ProSwitcher makes app switching seamless, and I have to say, with a certain style.

9 to 5 Mac gives a pretty good description of how it works:

You can trigger the cards view by opening the application from home-screen, touching the status bar, or by double clicking the home button. To add an application to the Cards view, you simple have to launch the app, then hold down the home button for about one to two seconds. To remove an app from the “Cards” view click the close button on the top left of the card, to swipe the card up the screen.

Here is a short video of ProSwitcher in action:

I ran ProSwitcher on my 3GS for a few hours with up to 10 apps open at once. It didn’t crash, it didn’t lag and the battery didn’t seem to take a big hit from it. Obviously your mileage may vary…

What I like the best about ProSwitcher is how you can smoothly switch between apps without having to close/reopen them. Actually no! What I like the best about ProSwitcher is that it is free on Cydia via the BigBoss repo. Yes it’s free, so grab it until the dev realizes that he should make you pay 10 bucks for it.

ProSwitcher is one of this application that should be implemented in the next iPhone OS and honestly, I really believe (and predict) that Apple is already stripping down the code of this app and trying to make it its own for iPhone OS 4.0.

Have you tried ProSwitcher yet? How do you like it?
