iPhone OS 3.1 Coming This Weekend?
posted by: Sebastien in Iphone on 07 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

Well, the world didn’t come to an end after the demo of the SMS bug in the iPhone yesterday by a bunch of hackers. Actually, nothing seems to have happened at all. My guess is that the hackers demoed the bug to a small audience instead of hacking hundreds of iPhones, which would have probably led to legal issues.

The good thing about this is that Apple is said to release a patch for the bug sometimes this weekend, according to the UK network operator 02.

An O2 spokesperson said the patch would be available Saturday through iTunes.

The hackers had tried to warn Apple of the consequences, and as usual, Apple had completely ignored them. Put on the spot, Apple didn’t have much choice but react and release a patch…

What’s this patch going to be? 3.1 or 3.0.1? If it is true that Apple will release a patch tomorrow, I bet that it’s going to be version 3.0.1 as I think it’s still a little early for Apple to release version 3.1. But hey, I might be totally way off.

As usual, in the event that a software update would be available this weekend, jailbreakers and unlockers should NOT update as it will remove the jailbreak/unlock.

Thank you Twitter follower @lambsypie for the tip.

Best Solitaire Games for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
    posted by: Bltzkri3g in Mobile Tech on 07 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

solitaire games for nokia 5800This one goes for all the Solitaire fans out there: We are reviewing the very best of the Solitaire games available on the mobile platform S60 5th Edition. Paragon Software offers the most popular solitaire games  for our Nokia 5800s.

Paragon Software offers Top Hits Solitaire Collection and Can’t Stop Solitaire Collection, which promise hours of engrossing gameplay on our Tube 5800s. While Top Hits offers 15 best Solitaires, the Can’t Stop offers a mind blowing 250 Solitaires. Lets check out both of these games in more details.

How many of you are aware of the history of Solitaire? The card game can actually be traced back to 14th Century and its really fascinating that the game continues to amuse gamers even in this day of high end graphics and simulation. Solitaire games are one of the most popular games across several platforms today (PC, Windows Mobile and Symbian).

    1) Top Hits Solitaire collection

It offers some of the most popular Solitaires like Canfield, Klondike, Golf and Spider (total 15 solitaires), which we can assure you will not disappoint even the most hardcore solitaire fans. There are a ton of customisation options as well to tailor fit the game to suit your preferences.

We played around the background colour and the graphics on the hind side of the card and were more than happy with the number of options available.

15 Solitaire games is a lot and we don’t expect you to know the rules of each of them and thankfully the developers thought the same too and have included animated tutorials for each Solitaire. Another feature which we found very helpful was the bookmark feature which is akin to pausing the game and resuming later.

    Screenshots:

    2) Can’t Stop Solitaire Collection

If 15 Solitaire games is not convincing enough, how about 250 solitaire games? Do we have your attention now? This is what Can’t Stop Solitaire offers and we can’t think of any Solitaire fan who would not be happy with this collection.

250 is a big number and finding your favourite solitaire can be a daunting task even on a 3.2″ screen of our Tube 5800s (more so in the absence of Kinetic scrolling). Thankfully the game lists the Solitaires in alphabetical order and even classifies them depending on the difficulty level and time required for solving.

    Screenshots:

We all like to brag about our achievements, don’t we? The developers are very much aware of this human tendency and are encouraging us to indulge in some self boasting by providing exhaustive game analysis at the end of each game and statistics of all the solitaire games played on our 5800s for both Top Hits and Can’t Stop Solitaire Collection. We won’t be fascinated to see Solitaire tournaments being hosted by proud 5800ers!

    Verdict:

Priced at USD 19.95, Top Hits Solitaire Collection is a real steal and a must have for every Solitaire fan, while Can’t Stop Solitaire Collection, priced at USD 29.95 is more for the hardcore Solitaire player.

Don’t forget to cash-in on our exclusive 20% discount using the coupon code “Tube5800open” till 7th of Aug. Free trials are available for both games.

Top 5 Must-Have Jailbreak Apps: Post iPhone 3.0 Edition
posted by: Jeremy Sikora in Mobile Tech on 07 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

    iphone_pirate_2

Today TiPb brings you round four of the Top 5 Must-Have Jailbreak Apps series, this one focused on what still makes Jailbreak compelling in a post-iPhone 3.0 world.

Now, all of the Jailbreak experts out there will (or should!) know about all these apps already. The purpose of this article is to give our readers who may not be familiar with the jailbreak community just a little taste of what is out there. So, if you’re still debating whether or not to jailbreak your iPhone, after reading this we are guessing that you will make up your mind one way or another…

All of the following applications can be downloaded via Cydia on your Jailbroken iPhone.

    Read on after the jump!

    GV Mobile

Is it really a shock that the first application in this article happens to be the latest and greatest app to be removed from the App Store by Apple? Right after the app’s removal, developer Sean Kovacs tossed it directly into the hands of the jailbreak community. With GV Mobile and a Google Voice phone number you can do the following:

    • Dial numbers via the iPhone address book or typing on the keypad
    • Full SMS support (view historic, reply, send new)
    • Retrieve and delete recent call history
    • Playback and delete voicemails
    • Take calls from different phones other than your iPhone
    • Enable or disable the phones that Google Voice forwards calls to
    • Add or delete phones that Google Voice forwards call to

    Backgrounder

Backgrounder allows you to multitask App Store apps on your iPhone in the background. Yes, you heard me correctly, you can now listen to Pandora while you are in your favorite App Store app! This is your perfect opportunity to show Palm Pre owners how it’s done. ;)

Just press and hold the home key while running any application. After a few seconds, the “Backgrounding Enabled” pop-up appears. Release the home button, Backgrounder automatically returns you to SpringBoard. After that feel free to open any of application you see fit. To quit the background application, re-launch it from SpringBoard, then press and hold Home until the Backgrounding Disabled pop-up appears. It’s as simple as that.

    qTweeter

Do you find yourself on one of the million iPhone App Store Twitter clients most of the day? If you answered yes to that question you may just find this app worth a good look. qTweeter is status update application that lets you tweet messages and update your Facebook status. You launch qTweeter by sliding your finger down from the status area and can start tweeting right away. Then you simply press the update button to update your Facebook status, send your Tweet, or both.

Some features of qTweeter are as follows:

    • Update Facebook and Twitter at once
    • Update your status on top of any app
    • TwitPic support
    • TwitVid support
    • Shortened URL
    • Music Tweets, YouTube Tweets, Safari Tweets
    • Long Tweet and TweetShrink support
    • Fast shortcut to your other Twitter app

    Winterboard

For those of you who really want to apply a different look to your iPhone user interface, Winterboard. is the app for you. Using Winterboard you can apply complete skins to your device or just specific parts of it. Some of the things you can customize include app icons, wallpaper, statusbar, dock, etc… You can spend hours tweaking your UI ways that will make you wonder why Apple didn’t think of this.

    SBSettings 3.0.2

The last app for today, SBSettings, addresses a common complaint that we hear a lot about the iPhone. Do you want a way to turn Wi-Fi on and off without going through all the settings? SBSettings can help you out. How about adjusting your screen brightness? How about the ability to toggle Bluetooth on and off with a single button on your home screen? Edge and 3G? I’m sure you get where I am going with this.

    Conclusion

The jailbreak community seems to have a bright future with the way Apple has been keeping the App Store on lockdown lately. Whether you decide to jailbreak your iPhone - please remember TiPb and any and all staff and writers take no responsibility for any mishaps, mistakes, wrong doings, etc, that may occur during the jailbreak process.

    iPhone SDK: Hardcore Gaming

Warning that its profits may decline, Wii and DS manufacturer Nintendo played the “current economic conditions” card but also laid a new one on the gaming table — increased competition thanks to Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch.

The newly launched Nintendo DSi is seen as a partial response to Apple’s new gaming model, according to Electronista, which includes an on-device digital App Store, rather than the cartridge based physical media traditional gaming companies have thus far preferred.

Still, if the next edition of Mario has an Apple or Steve Jobs looking boss level, we’ll know Nintendo is taking it seriously…

Regarding that Leaked Black “iPhone” Bezel…

Turns out that leaked black bezel that made the internet rounds prior to the iPhone 3GS’ rounds was… actually for a Creative Zii Egg. Says CNET Asia provides the picture, and MacRumors the short version:

The Zii Egg is a multi-touch iPod touch-like device that runs Google’s Android operating system. The device, though, bears a strong resemblance to the leaked bezel images, suggesting that it had simply been mislabeled all along.

Hey, at least now we know. Though, admittedly, the nearly intoxicating swarm of pre-release rumors are much more fun than the cold, headachy, post-release rumor smashing that followers…

Black Hat: SMS Attacks Not Just for iPhones

    hacking-into-iphone-sms

Technologizer is reporting on the developing story on SMS attacks coming out of today’s Black Hat Conference sessions. Seems like while the iPhone is grabbing a lot of attention, almost all GSM phones are said to be vulnerable. Basically, they get around the anti-spoofing security and send data designed to get access and take control of the phone.

On the iPhone specific side, however:

In a final coup for the conference, Lackey and Miras demonstrated an iPhone app they call TAFT which can, at the click of a few buttons, transmit various types of attacks against specific, vulnerable phone models, including iPhones, and phones running the Windows Mobile 5 and pre-”cupcake” Android operating systems.

Vendors, including Apple are working on patching the exploit, though there is still no word which specific models or firmware versions are vulnerable.

More as the story continues to develop.

Another Fun App: Seismograph Touch for Nokia 5800
    posted by: Bltzkri3g in Mobile Tech on 07 31st, 2009 | | Comments Off

After reviewing a geeky app: Elements yesterday, we are back to having some fun for today’s review. You would have probably seen this app-Seismograph Touch, while you were searching for Elements yesterday.

Seismograph Touch is a great fun app from one of the most widely known developers of the symbian fifth edition platform-Offscreen Technologies. The app does an excellent job of faking the functionality of a seismograph using the on-board accelerometer of 5800.

Time and again, Offscreen Technologies keep throwing at us well designed apps, some educational (like Elements reviewed yesterday), some very functional (like Strobe Touch), some purely entertaining (games like Solo Noble, Fifteen etc) and with Seismograph Touch they are tickling our funny bones. This app basically uses the onboard accelerometer to measure movement and displays the detected movements in a classic seismograph.

As you may have guessed it, this is no real seismograph by any standards and doesn’t measure and record motions of the ground nor it shows any readings  based on the Richter scale as such. The can be used at best at a party table to fool your non-symbian friends with the supposed seismograph functions of this app. Since the app is very well designed and does a good job of detecting the motion and representing it in a seismograph, some of your gullible friends might actually fall for it.

And as always with accelerometer based apps, please have a firm hold on your 5800s while you are trying this app out, lest you ending up making a fool of yourself instead of fooling your friends!

This fun app can be downloaded for free from the ovi web store (remember to sign-in) and ovi client on your 5800s (easier).
