MUPE archived from Beta Labs
posted by: in Uncategorized on 01 30th, 2009 | | No Comments »

Message from MUPE team:

MUPE thanks all the Beta Labs testers, but now it is time to move ahead.

Past year we focused on running the service and collected good feedback on both the basic technology and applications. The development efforts were used in porting the key parts of MUPE platform into Nokia Games development platform. This internal technology transfer is now successfully concluded and it is time to archive MUPE from Beta Labs. However, MUPE will not disappear and it will be still available as an open source from http://www.mupe.net/.

During the past 12 months MUPE got over 25000 testers. Thanks for all!

Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga at the Nokia 5800 Dance Party
posted by: in Uncategorized on 01 29th, 2009 | | No Comments »

Paris Hilton was at the Nokia 5800 Tube Launch Party at Punk Soho in London last night. She also met her old school mate Lady GaGa for the first time in London and what a dynamite blonde combo that was!

Wearing a canary yellow dress with black beading, Paris posed for pictures with Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson, who tried to teach her how to dance. Paris was joined by the contestants from her show “Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend”.

GaGa was DJing and performing at the Nokia 5800 launch, Paris Hilton joined her behind the DJ Booth. Both spotted chatting and giggling with each other for long and Paris even did a fun interview with Lady Gaga (check the video below).

Other stars at the launch included Celebrity Big Brother quitter Mutya Buena, I’m A Celebrity winner Joe Swash, TV beauty Naomi Millbank Smith, Supermodel David Gandy and Mick Jagger’s daughter Jade.

Video: Audio Smileys, introduced by Ilkka Peltola and Janne Teinilä

Here’s something small for you (or for your kids):

Audio Smileys is a cute little application that allows you to play funny sounds to express your feelings. It is mostly targeted for youngsters, but of course, anyone can use it for fooling around with friends, or pulling pranks at co-workers. Once launched, just press keys 1…9 on your keypad to play the sound. In additon, you can create your own audio smileys with the built-in audio smiley editor.

Download Audio Smileys from here.

Now, I know some of you must be wondering: why are we piloting this kind of stuff here at Beta Labs, as we know that most of you don’t belong to the target user group. In fact, we had a lengthy discussion about this here at Nokia. In the end, we concluded, again, that this should be decided by you, our beloved user community:

Should we publish also small and less-serious stuff like Audio Smileys at Beta Labs or not?
( surveys)

The choice is yours.

How to Fix the ‘Expired Certificate’ Problem in Nokia 5800
posted by: in Uncategorized on 01 27th, 2009 | | No Comments »

Alright, so many of you are facing problems while installing applications on Nokia 5800. We get some queries daily from users that when they try to install the apps, they get “expired certificate” errors. Hopefully this will get fixed in the next firmware update for Nokia 5800, but for now here is the solution to try.

If you have already tried the common solutions like changing the date of your phone to few months back, allow the software installation to ALL in your application manager, turn off the online certificate check, phone resetting or formatting, etc.  and if nothing works for you, try this solution below - IT WORKS!!

How to Fix the Nokia 5800 “Expired Certificate” Installation Error:

1) Backup all your messages, contacts, notes, calendar entries, etc. by using Nokia PC Suite.

2) After you have the backup, you have to remove the MicroSD card. Do not remove the card directly when the phone is on, card and data can get corrupt. Follow these steps to remove MicroSD card-

a) Press the power key, sroll down and select “Remove Memory Card” option.
b) Press ‘YES’ when asked “Removing memory card will close all open applications. Remove anyway?”
c) Shortly after, the “Remove Memory Card and press OK” message appears, the microSD is ready to be unplugged or removed now from the dedicated slot.

3) Enter *#7370# code on your screen to restore the phone to Factory Default Settings. This will delete all your personal data.

4) Next, you will be asked the phone lock code, if you have not changed this earlier, enter the default one which is 12345.

5) The phone will reboot, select your country as “HONG KONG”. Some users reported the phone works fine even while selecting their correct country but for some only HONG KONG works. Its better to chose Hong Kong here for now, we can change it later.

6) Power off the phone again and put back the Micro SD card in its slot.

7) Restart the phone and Voila!! your Nokia 5800 is ready to install any signed application.

Hope the above steps makes you guys happy and finally get rid of this annoying certificate error. Cheers!!

Nokia 5800 Shipments Reach 1 Million Milestone
posted by: in Uncategorized on 01 25th, 2009 | | No Comments »

Over this weekend, Nokia announced that they have just shipped the 1 million Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phones making it one of their most successful phones to date. The milestone coincides with the successful sales start of the device in the UK.

Following its introduction in October 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has seen successful sales starts in a number of markets, including Hong Kong and Moscow where the device sold out within hours of the sales start.

“The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been received very positively and this milestone is just further proof that people all over the world want a device that is not only a great music experience, but also makes the most of touch screen technology,” said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia in Official Press Release.

Even though it hasn’t been released all over the globe, impressive sales in regions like Hong Kong, Russia, Philippines and India as well has helped the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic attain this feat at such a short amount of time. It is beyond our dream now to imagine the sales figures of this phone when it finally gets launched globally and particularly in major markets like US and parts of Europe.

The Nokia Tube has been warmly welcomed in Great Britain too on its launch this Friday. The rains and bad weather didn’t dampen spirits at 5800 launch on London’s Regent Street. More than 150 lined up to be among the first to own a Nokia 5800. Nokia staff were on hand to ensure the gathering crowds stayed both warm and dry. For those without protection, Nokia umbrellas were handed out.

Farewell Nokia Chat - long live Contacts on Ovi!
posted by: in Uncategorized on 01 23rd, 2009 | | No Comments »

contacts_on_ovi_blog.jpg

Written by Kristian Luoma, Product Manager, Contacts on Ovi team

Hey all,

If you’re a regular Beta Labs blog reader, you’ve probably noticed that our monthly updates of Nokia Chat (see here, here, and here) have stopped for a few months. This has been simply because we’ve had to focus on getting a bit more of your requests made. While weighing your most valuable input to our product team, we’ve run a number of studies with teams of people here and there. This has been a great learning process for us.

Today, it’s time to say goodbye to Nokia Chat. On this same day, we’re asking you to give a warm welcome to Contacts on Ovi mobile client. You’ll find the experience very close to what Nokia Chat offered you - it’s a natural evolution of what Nokia Chat was.

What’s new, apart from the brand? I’ll have to first say that the clients are in a better shape, we’ve resolved lots of bugs that have been bothering you and us too. Secondly, we’re supporting lots of more devices now. The new platform we have a client for is S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. It’s about time, right? We wanted it to look better, and have more features in it. With the new client available for the latest models you’ll be able to broadcast the music you listen as a part of your personal message (for those of you that are in to XMPP, I’ll just give out that it’s using the PEP extension, which you’ll find supported in some PC clients too).

Oh, and if you have friends who have a Series 40 based phone, there’s a J2ME client available too.

We need still your help to get this right, and we trust you to give us open feedback about what you’d like to see.

With the Contacts on Ovi client you’ll be able to chat with your friends in Google Talk too.

You’ll find the clients from this page. (note: please remove the Nokia Chat and the support package from your device before installing the new client!)

Enjoy, and thanks in advance for your thoughts!

BR, Kristian

Ps. Yes, the Nokia Chat friends are with you when you sign on to Contacts on Ovi mobile client. Yes, it works with your existing Nokia Acocunt. Yes, you can chat with Nokia Chat users still after you’ve installed the Contacts on Ovi client -)

New community-driven Beta Labs website graduates, check it out!!
posted by: in Uncategorized on 01 23rd, 2009 | | No Comments »

Ladies and gents, we are proud to present you the new, community-driven Beta Labs website - take a look around!!

What’s new:

  • Community driven site: everything has been designed with the community in mind
  • Better and “more alive” user experience: sorting and filtering the application list, screenshot and video galleries, reviews and ratings, new look&feel, etc.
  • From private feedback to public conversations. Each app has its own discussion forum, categorized into (1) Reviews, (2) Bug reports, (3) Suggestions, and (4) Discussions.
  • Nokia Account sign-in and reputation system for contributors: your contribution history is saved in your user profile
  • Very easy to keep improving the site iteratively, thanks to the new technical platform (= Drupal based)

So how did we end up here? Well, we started designing and building the new site early last summer, and after a couple of unexpected sidetracks, detours and cul-de-sacs, the bits and pieces things started to finally fall into place, and we were able to publish the new site as a beta just before Christmas. And today, after one month of piloting the site through itself (creating a strange loop Douglas Hofstadter would have been proud of), we were confident enough to do the full transition.

Of course, there are still a lot of things to be done:

  • Ironing out the rough edges (together with you = the user community)
  • Redesigning the front page and user profile pages (we haven’t designed these properly yet)
  • Mobile browser optimization
  • Etc.

For every Beta Labs app that has not been archived / graduated, there is always at least one responsible person from the R&D team committed to follow the respective discussion forum. For the forum dedicated for further improving this Beta Labs website, the responsible person is my mate Ilkka Peltola*. I hired Ilkka as a thesis worker last year, and he proved to be a perfect guy for the job. And now, he has taken the product manager role of Beta Labs website and related systems. Please join me in congratulating Ilkka for his new role!!

* = as with all other Beta Labs projects, Ilkka doesn’t have time to reply to everyone - don’t get mad -)

Is Buy.com preparing for a new Nokia tablet? They have the Nokia N810 now for only $219. Other store prices range around $300-400. Is there an upcoming announcement we should prepare for or Buy.com is just clearing out leftover N810’s?

Nokia N810 Internet Tablet

I haven’t personally spent some time with the tablets, but you can read more about the Nokia N810 from a some of our contributors here on The Nokia Blog. Here’s Andrew’s Review: Fun with the Nokia N810 and Matthew’s Nokia Internet Tablet Top 8 Applications.
