Simple Mobile Blogging With Nokia E71 And Posterous
posted by: in Uncategorized on 12 29th, 2008 | | No Comments »

My recent discovery is the Posterous service that lets you quickly blog with photos or videos by using email on the phone. I’ve been enjoying using the Nokia E71 with Posterous for the past couple of days. The E71’s camera isn’t great, but you can use it to quickly share images on the blog posts. However, I can think of one other device that will be more suitable for this service.

Posterous e71It’s as simple as sending an email to post@posterous.com and attaching photos, videos, audio, and even other files. A blog will automatically be created with a random screen name, so you can just keep posting new entries by sending in more emails.

If you want to personalize the subdomain (for example markguim.posterous.com), then follow the instructions on the first email reply you get from Posterous. I created my first entry and account in just a few minutes while waiting for my fiancee to finish trying on clothes at the mall.

You can use your existing email solution to do this. I use Profimail, but there are a bunch of other email options available.

Auto Gallery and Video Player

Other than the major simplicity, my favorite Posterous feature is an automatic creation of an image gallery (sample post) if you attach more than one photos! They’ll also create a flash player (sample post) automatically if you chose to upload videos.

Autoposting

Posterous also has an option for automatic posting to other services like Facebook, Twitter, or Flickr. Whatever you post on Posterous can be forwarded to the other social sites you use. Only want to post to certain services? They have that option too.

Auto Post to Everywhere

Almost a perfect match

The Qwerty keypad on the Nokia E71 is great for Posterous because it makes it fast to create blog posts on the go. Since the E71 also has a 3 megapixel camera, it’s really useful to add photos and videos to the posts. Unfortunately, the camera is horrible. It looks like the Nokia N97 will be the perfect device for this.

Nokia 5800 Game ‘Meteor Arkanoid’- Inviting BETA Testers

A new Nokia 5800 game is on its way- Meteor Arkanoid! This is a 90-level action brick breaking game with lots of amazing space sceneries, breathtaking gameplay and high quality sound effects.

The Nokia 5800 version of the game with S60 5th edition compatibility is currently under heavy development and the game developers are looking for gamers to beta test the game and share their experience and feedback with them.

So if you are one of those lucky 5800 Xpress Music owners and are a gaming freak too, just grab this addictive game and share your thoughts/ suggestions and report bugs about this game.

In this brick-busting game your goal is to destroy moving blocks and static destructible bricks. Hostile robots will fight against you. Enemy ships and non-destructible blocks will prevent you from breaking bricks.

The Nokia N97 Could Be The Answer To My Problem
posted by: in Uncategorized on 12 27th, 2008 | | No Comments »

There are two phones that I use regularly but leave the house with only one that I think will serve me most for the day. They are the Nokia N85 and the Nokia E71. I can’t get rid of one because none of the two devices have everything that I want in a phone. If Nokia doesn’t mess up the Nokia N97, it will be the answer to my problem.

Nokia n97

I love the Nokia N85 because of the camera, multimedia features, and size. I love the Nokia E71 because of its speed, size, and the qwerty keypad. However, the N85 lacks qwerty and the E71’s camera is useless. If I’m going to be hanging out with friends, I’ll bring the N85. If I’m going to the school or the mall, I’ll bring the E71 for better email and texting experience.

The announcement of the Nokia N97 came with specs that should make any Nokia fan drool. It has the 5mp camera, the large touchscreen, qwerty keypad, GPS, a big battery, and lots more.

Don’t Let Us Down

It sounds like the perfect device! I’m just hoping it lives up to the specs. I have been disappointed before. Will it have purple pics like the E71? Rattle like the N81? Slow like the initial firmwares on the N96?

Nokia… please don’t let us down.

Setting Up New Nokia Phone - A Guide for Newbies
posted by: in Uncategorized on 12 25th, 2008 | | No Comments »

So you just got a new Nokia phone. We’ve got the first steps and recommendations for your new shiny toy, whether it is a gift from yourself or a loved one. If you’re a Nokia veteran, send a link to this post to the newbie on your holiday list.

Newbies

Check Firmware

The first thing you need to do before doing anything is check for firmware updates. The latest phones let you do the upgrades over the air, but if it’s not available, you’ll need to run Nokia Software Updater.

Methods:

Connect With Computer

I am a Mac user, so I am more familiar with using my phone with a Mac. If you’re a PC user and think I need to add more info, please comment.

PC Users - If you do not already have Nokia PC Suite, it’s time to set that up. It is a free PC software product that allows you to connect your Nokia device to a PC and access mobile content as if the device and the PC were one.

Mac users unfortunately do not have the convenience of having a “Mac Suite,” but Nokia is kind enough to give us some tools. To synchronize data between a Mac and Nokia phone, you’ll need an iSync plugin which can be downloaded at nokia.com/mac. To transfer music, photos, games, and more, you’ll need to install Nokia Multimedia transfer.

I prefer to send files between my phone and Macbook using bluetooth. After pairing and authorizing the connection once, it’s easy as right-clicking a file then “send to bluetooth device,” whenever I need to send files to the phone.

Maps

If your Nokia phone came with Nokia Maps, you’ll want to download your local map files into your phone so that it loads up faster. You need to install Nokia Map Loader. It comes in PC and Mac versions.

Install Apps

It’s time to install some applications for your phone. Read about my top 10 apps to install and make sure to read the comments for readers’ recommendations too.

Guides

The steps above are what I believe the first few things you need to get things rolling. There are always new apps to be found and cool things to do with our phones so make sure you navigate around the blog especially the Nokia blog guides and videoblog sections. Some of my favorites are:

More Tips

If you’re a long-time Nokia user already, are there more tips you think the newbies should know? Let us know!

Ho-ho-hoo!

As an early Christmas present, we are proud to give you a sneak peek to the renewed Beta Labs website! This is a splendid opportunity for you to really affect how the service will look and work in the future. The site is currently in early beta, so again, be prepared for some rough edges. But we were just SO eager to get it out there before Christmas! It’s been a long and rocky road, but we’re finally getting there!

We are planning to replace the old site with the new during January and we would really appreciate your feedback. So if you want to have an influence, check out the site and post your thoughts, suggestions, bug reports and reviews on the forum. The new site is linked to Nokia Account, so you can use that to sign in. We know it is far from perfect, but we wanted to give you the privilege to see it as early as possible.

So, hope you like the direction we are taking the service. Please, check out the site and discuss it on the forum -your actions have a direct effect on our work in January. An please do it before Sunday, as we probably will need to close the forum then for a week.

Give Me a 720p Nokia Phone - Successor To Nokia N93
posted by: in Uncategorized on 12 23rd, 2008 | | No Comments »

Remember when the Nokia N93 revolutionized the mobile world by bringing near DVD video recording quality to a phone? Soon afterwards, most Nseries devices carried over the 640×480 resolution and 30 frames per second recording as a standard feature. Now that Youtube is “HD”, video bloggers will get curious with compact High-Def camcorders. Nokia needs to take advantage of this by bringing out an HD video phone.

Kodak zi6
Kodak Zi6 capable of shooting HD videos. Where’s Nokia?

Right now, you can get a compact HD 720p (1280×720 resolution) camcorder that are easy on the wallet. I don’t want to get into an argument with video experts what real HD is supposed to be versus internet HD, but if you want your videos on Youtube to have the “watch in HD” option, the current popular options are the Kodak Zi6 for $140, or the Flip MinoHD and the new Creative Labs Vado 8GB for $200 each.

The Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 are phones that record videos at widescreen aspect, but only at 640×360 resolution. That is far from being “HD.”

Am I alone with this request or are there others that want to start shooting videos with their phone that people can watch on Youtube in HD?
