A reader commented about Mobbler on my top 10 apps to install, so I tried it. You should do the same if you haven’t done so. Mobbler is Last.fm for your phone. In other words, you can stream music based on keywords or tags without the hassle of transferring music from your computer.

Note: head straight to the blog if the video does not appear in your RSS reader.

If I feel like listening to upbeat music, I’ll just type in “upbeat” and press play. You can skip to the next song and even let the player know if you like or don’t like the song. It can generate a recommended playlist for you based on the songs you rated.

I really like that Mobbler shows the album art with the artist name and song title.

The best thing about Mobbler is that I don’t need to download music before listening to it. The songs are streamed. The experience is excellent if you have fast 3G or wifi connection.

Mobbler is free to download but you also need to sign up for a free account at Last.fm. The phone I used for this demo was the Nokia N85, but the app should work with all Nokia S60 3rd edition mobile phones.

What with all the recession talk and lackluster earnings from phone makers, it wasn’t much of a surprise to hear that third quarter cell phone shipments fell 0.4% from the previous quarter (Q2), and gained a mere 3.2% compared to last year. But what was interesting, was the new rankings for global market share.

(in order from largest market share to smallest)

Nokia - 39.4%
Samsung - 17.3%
Sony Ericsson - 8.6%
Motorola - 8.5%
LG Electronics - 7.7%

So what changed? Motorola lost 4.3% market share in the past year, going from third to fourth place. LG gained 0.1% market share but remained in fifth place overall. The big winner, it seems, is none other than Samsung, who has been able to cement its second-place hold at 17.3% global market share, up from 14.7% a year ago. Nokia didn’t fare badly either, gaining a cool 0.8% to 39.4%.

There’s a lot of cool stuff in the IDC report, like a regional analysis (North America: smartphones are selling strong) and more phone manufacturer-specific analysis. Check it out:

Contest: Win a Bunch of High School Musical Stuff (UK Only)
posted by: in Uncategorized on 10 30th, 2008 | | No Comments »

Nokia’s UK Music store is promoting the new movie High School Musical 3, and the official soundtrack with its latest contest. Grand prize: a gift voucher to watch the movie at any ODEON cinema and an “exclusive” High School Music 3 goodie bag. And from what I can tell, the goodie bag includes a mini basketball, a Post-It pad, a bag, a picture frame, and what appears to be a portable disco ball.

Unfortunately there’s only one winner, so you’ll need oodles of luck (and be a UK resident) to win this one. Good luck!

First it was Batman movie “The Dark Knight“, then it was the recent Britney’s “Womanizer” video and now its Christina Aguilera’s latest “Keeps Gettin’ Better” video featuring Nokia 5800 Xpress Music. A perfect marketing strategy from the Nokia team to place the Nokia 5800 smart phone in top music albums and movies to get the device noticed and talked about vastly before the launch.

Now look how Christina Aguilera is enjoying her company with the Nokia smartie, the tube 5800 in these stills and then the full video right here for you.

‘Keeps Getting Better’ is Christina’s first single and released from her upcoming super hit collection ‘Keeps Gettin’ Better- A Decade of Hits’. Its already rocking the charts at #7 on Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on Canadian Hot 100.

Check out the full video now, Nokia Tube 5800 appears at about 1.01 min for a few seconds-

Nokia N96 Ninja’s First Challenge
posted by: in Uncategorized on 10 29th, 2008 | | No Comments »

For my first Nokia N96 Trial Challenge, I was supposed to take a geotagged photo from the Nokia N96 and upload it to Nokia Vine which is currently in closed beta. My buddies and I were originally just meeting up for dinner, but I decided to bring the ninja costume and have some fun with the challenge

Andrew volunteered to be the ninja, Ninong Brown as the victim, and I took the pictures with the Nokia N96 at a mall parking lot.

These are the photos I uploaded to Vine for my challenge. I am unable to see it on the official Vine website yet, so I’ve also uploaded it to my flickr.

Note: if the embedded flash slideshow is not visible, head straight to the blog.

Limitations

Let me just say that Nokia N96 is not a great cameraphone at night compared to the Nokia N82. Even with the new dual LEDs flash, it is not strong enough. This is an area where the Nokia N82 remains the champion.

Another problem was with the Nokia Vine application I was testing. It crashed on me twice freezing up the phone and forcing me to take out the battery to restart. I was able to upload the pictures after the third attempt.

Fisheye

I wanted some pictures of the ninja with the Nokia N96 so Ninong Brown took out his DSLR with fisheye lens. Click on the photo below to see the rest of the pictures taken with his camera.

The Next Challenge

I’m waiting for the next challenge. I’ll let you know as soon as I’m notified of the task at hand. As a reminder, if I win the challenge, I will be given FIVE Nokia N96’s to send out to others to trial. I will consider the top blog commentators, forum posters, and contributing writers.

Contact me if you want to publish an editorial, review, or guide at the Nokia Blog. This is also a good venue for you to get some exposure from our 250,000 monthly pageviews.

Using Nokia N82 at BarcampLA6
posted by: in Mobile Tech on 10 28th, 2008 | | No Comments »

This past weekend, I attended BarcampLA6 which took place at Mahalo HQ in Santa Monica, CA. Barcamp is an “unconference ” where people can share and learn in an open environment. Most of Los Angeles’ tech community showed up to talk about things they are knowledgeable about. I attended talks ranging from dating tips, zombie hacking, budget movie making and twitter novels. I took a lot of pictures with the Nokia N82.

Note: If the embedded flash slideshow below is not visible in your RSS reader, head over to the blog.

Barcamp is a great place for people to show off gadgets. Macbooks are overwhelmingly popular, almost 75% of everyone there had one. Netbooks are not as popular as I thought, I only saw a handful of them there.

Blackberries and iPhones were certainly popular. I was glad to see the Android G1 for the first time, I saw at least 5 people using them. There’s some pretty neat apps for Android, I loved the barcode reader. I saw quite a few Nokia N95s, mainly being used for QIK livestreaming. I saw one person use his N95 as a remote for his powerpoint presentation.

Perhaps the neatest gadget I saw was the Microsoft Surface. It was interesting to see so many people interact with it at the same time. I learned that it uses a camera to detect touches and the apps run on Silverlight.

A great aspect of barcamp is being with gamers. I got to play an original Street Fighter 2 arcade cabinet. People spent most of Saturday night playing Rockband. My favorite was playing Mario Kart DS, playing with people is more fun for me compared to online play.

I took a lot of pictures with my Nokia N82. There were multiple wifi access points available at the Mahalo complex, one access point was stronger on one half of the facility compared to others. To take advantage of this, I went into the settings and made sure the default access point was set to none. After every picture, I would select Post to Web. I added a title, picked my tags and picked the best access point. Uploads were quite simple. The hardest part was thinking up a title for each picture on the fly.

There was a monitor on display with pictures tagged with barcampla6, so I often saw my pictures load. This is what I love about instant uploads, not having to wait until I’m near a computer to upload and manage this stuff. Its all done on my phone.

Share Online came in handy to help me make sure I didn’t double post some images. I constantly updated my photostream to see what I’ve uploaded and see any comments available. I did occasionally do some double uploads. I used my Nokia N800 to log onto flickr and delete the pictures from my photostream.

Nokia CarMenu v2.4 Now Available

The Nokia Car Kit gets another update. Now how about my E66?

The Nokia Car Kit gets another update. Now how about my E66?

Salvaged from a previous entry: “If you’re one of the ten owners of the Nokia Car Kit CK-300, you’re in luck: Nokia just released an updated firmware for the device.” And so it is again. The aptly named CarMenu application is now rockin’ with some new, badass features like bigger, more badass fonts.

Here’s the changelog:

  • instant access to all your mobile contacts from the car kit
  • instant access to all your mobile phone music tracks from the car kit
  • full control with the external input device
  • bigger fonts for better readability and usability
  • same look and feel regarding the user interface

If you weren’t aware, the CarMenu app is for phones that want to emulate the look and feel of the actual car kit display. The advantage, I suppose, is so you can use that monstrous spinny thing to go through your contacts rather than hitting your up and down arrows on your phone.

Compatibility is fairly good, as long as you have a Nokia phone that isn’t a piece of crap: most E- and N-Series devices are included, minus the N82/N85/N79. There’s a landscape version for the E61/71 family, and a portrait version for everyone else.

Grab the 2.4 CarMenu application update.

Nokia N96 Video Recording With Dual LEDs
posted by: in Uncategorized on 10 27th, 2008 | | No Comments »

One thing I love about the Nokia N96 (and the N85), is that you can record videos with the dual LED lights on so you actually see your subjects in the dark. We tested this at the park two nights ago so you can see it in action.

I usually like to edit my videos on iMovie before publishing, but this video is a direct upload to Flickr with absolutely no editing done. I found you need to be around 3 feet away from the subject to light them properly.

Note: head straight to the blog if the video is not visible in your RSS reader.

The photo taken during the video looks like this:

Nokia N96 vs Nokia N85 Video Recording Battle
posted by: in Uncategorized on 10 26th, 2008 | | No Comments »

We were at the park today and I had my hands on both the Nokia N96 and Nokia N85 to take some the basketball action on video. While both phones are capable of recording VGA at 30 fps, I’m a little surprised there are differences between the two videos.

The videos below are direct uploads to my Flickr with no editing done. Note: if videos are not visible in your RSS reader, head straight to the blog.

Nokia N96 Video

Nokia N85 Video

Spot The Difference

The Nokia N85 video is clearer and smoother. I also like the audio better on the Nokia N85. Another note is that the camera button on the Nokia N96 is harder to press than the Nokia N85.

Now that you’ve seen both videos, what differences do you see? Does the Nokia N85 perform better than the Nokia N96?
