I found something really useful other Mac users might love. I have been able to sync my iCal, Google calendar, and phone’s calendar using CalDav and GooSync. Read on to find out how.

Sync Ical Ggal Nokia

As an introduction, this solution is all possible thanks to CalDAV support in Google Calendar and Goosync support on S60 phones.

CalDAV

With CalDAV support in Google Calendar, you’ll be able to view and edit your Google Calendar events directly in Apple’s iCal. Any changes you make in iCal will automatically appear in Google Calendar the next time you sign in (and vice versa). If you use iCal while offline, changes you make will be saved and updated in Google Calendar when you get back online.

Setup iCal. First you’ll need to enable Google Calendar in Apple’s iCal. Google wrote a detailed how-to so I don’t need to write it here.

GooSync

Goo SyncGoosync synchronizes the phone’s calendar with Google Calendar without the need of installing an application. I can enter plans on my Nokia N95 8GB’s built in calendar application and then sync it to Google Calendar. I signed up for the free account since all I need is to sync my calendar. You can opt to get the premium type for more features if you wish.

Setup GooSync. Before you can synchronise your Google Calendar and Contacts you must first ensure your GooSync account is correctly authenticated with your Google account. Follow the directions to authenticate which only takes about 3 mouse clicks.

Finished

That’s it you are done. The end result is iCal, Google Calendar and the phone calendar being synced together. You can now edit your calendar on your phone, Mac, or any computer connected to the internet.

The only problem is it requires manual sync on the phone. You need to initiate the sync. I haven’t found anything right now that allows us to automatically sync our phone with Google calendar.

Today, we have upgraded the forums with a new URL and integrated user login. Let’s call it “Forums at The Nokia Blog.” I don’t want the forum to interfere with the insightful comments and discussions that happen within our blog posts, but rather have it be its own community for discussing anything and everything Nokia, and then some.

I opened the forums a couple months ago, but it was annoying that the blog and forum had separate user login forcing people to login twice. It took several days of installations and editing PHP and HTML, but I think it’s ready for action. If you find anything broken, just let us know on the forums.

Unfortunately, the upgrade also means deleting previous posts and usernames. It’s not a big deal though since registration only takes 10 seconds. Please welcome the new forums and participate with the new community.

Check out the results of my research!
posted by: in Uncategorized on 09 29th, 2008 | | No Comments »

In February, Tommi started looking for a MSc thesis worker to study Beta Labs. Tommi continued the search at Helsinki University of Technology, but eventually hired me, Ilkka, from a couple hundred kilometers up north for the job. And I’ve considered myself extremely fortunate.

Now, the thesis is finished and I will be graduating next week. Since the thesis is public, I am able to share it with you. But first, let me tell you how extremely thankful I am for your input! The questionnaire survey a few months back was a fundamental part of my thesis and a huge amount of Beta Labs users took part in it. So, again, thank you so much! It wouldn’t have been the same without this marvelous user community.

So for anyone of you who would like to read it, here it is. This is a final product, not a beta ) so I’m afraid improvement suggestions can not be acted on. But feedback is always welcome.

Cheers!

Next week, I’ll be participating in the Nokia N96 Trial Challenge created by WOMWorld Nokia. This would basically involve using the Nokia N96 and completing a series of weekly challenges set around the features of the device. It will also give me the chance to send five Nokia N96’s to our readers to trial.

Nokia n96

The details of the challenge will come next week, but be sure that I’ll try my best to win five Nokia N96 devices for you! If I win, I’ll be selecting five people that participate the most on the Nokia Blog by answering questions and leaving comments on posts throughout the blog.

I was also told this challenge involves a martial arts costume (inspired by Face The Task site)… I’ll keep you updated once I receive all the details!

Worth checking out at S60.com are a bunch of cool new themes for S60 3rd edition devices. With these free themes you can give your S60 a posh look. My two favorites definitely are “Japanese Laquer” and “Tulips“. We’ve also added a couple of pink themes, which I think at least Darla might be happy about :-) What’s your favorite?

Resident Evil coming to N-Gage
posted by: in Mobile Tech on 09 25th, 2008 | | No Comments »

I’m really excited to hear that the N-Gage Blog has announced Capcom is working on Resident Evil for N-Gage! In a related amazing coincidence the N-Gage Blog posted the news exactly one year after I posted here pondering if Capcom would bring Resident Evil to N-Gage.

Capcom has done some great things on mobile devices before, including Capcom Mobile bringing a Java version of Resident Evil to mobiles and there is an amazing port of Resident Evil 1 (aka Biohazard 1) for the Nintendo DS. They have a great track record of bringing Resident Evil to portables, so you can understand why I’m looking forward to seeing what Capcom does with Resident Evil on N-Gage.

We have to do some real tough decisions regarding the new website and we want you to help. So if you are interested in participating, join our chat session on Thursday September 25th, 5pm EEST (Eastern European Summer Time). Correct me if I’m wrong with these, but for a couple locations around the world this would mean the following times:

  • 7am San Francisco
  • 9am New York
  • 7:30pm Delhi
  • 12am (midnight!) Sydney

Again, we’ll have the chat on IRC. If you are familiar with IRC, then this should suffice for instructions:

IRC network: EFNet
server (e.g.): efnet.xs4all.nl
channel: #nokiabetalabs

To join the session, here are the instructions for those who don’t know about IRC

  1. Go to http://www.mibbit.com/
  2. Select Efnet.net from the server list
  3. Write #nokiabetalabs as the channel
  4. Pick a nickname for yourself (this has to be unique, so try to come up with something more original than “John”)
  5. Click connect.

The channel is currently protected with a password and will be opened at the beginning of the session.

See you there!

Review: Solar Cell Phone Charger by Daylight Savings
posted by: in Uncategorized on 09 23rd, 2008 | | No Comments »

I was really glad to bring the solar cell phone charger with me to Berlin because it saved me from low battery. It was provided by Daylight Savings for review. Bottom line, forget about the other chargers out there. This is the only one you need.

Solar Charger

The main feature of the Daylight Savings solar cell phone charger is that you can just place it by your window or car seat on and let it charge up, assuming there’s some sunlight outside. On a day where you know you’ll be taking lots of videos and pictures, bring the charger with you just in case. This is also really helpful during camping getaways where power outlets are hard to come by.

Don’t worry if there’s no sunlight. You can also juice up the charger with a USB cable connected to a laptop or computer.

Solar and usb Charging
You can also charge it with a USB cable.

The charger comes with different adapters fitting many popular brands including Nokia phones. The wire that comes with the package is pretty short. On my trip to Berlin, I actually used the Nokia CA-100 USB charger instead with the solar charger which is a little longer.

The solar phone charger has a 1200mAh battery inside. This means I can fully charge up a Nokia N95 8GB once until the solar charger’s battery becomes empty.

The Daylight Savings solar phone charger is not a necessity, but it’s one of those things that one day you’ll thank yourself for having one. For only $20 (+$4.99 for shipping), I think it’s a great deal. A popular competitor is the Proporta charger which costs more than double and does not have solar charging. Do I really need to ask which one is the better buy?
