Tip: Faster Multiple Selection Of Images And Videos In Gallery
posted by: in Uncategorized on 07 30th, 2008 | | No Comments »

For those who don’t know yet, there are faster ways to mark or select multiple images and videos on the Nokia/S60 Gallery. This is really useful for transferring files to your computer through bluetooth, or uploading multiple photos to Flickr and Ovi using the Nokia Share Online application.

After selecting the first photo, marking the rest is easier.

Fast Marking Option A

  • At the Gallery screen, go to one of the photos or videos you want to select, then press Options - Mark/Unmark - Mark. That photo is now marked (notice the check on the upper right corner).
  • Instead of going through the options again and again to select other files, press on the center key for each additional photo then Mark.

Fast Marking Option B

  • At the gallery screen, go to the first photo you want to select, then hold the pencil key (or # if you don’t have the pencil like the Nokia N82), with one of the direction keys.
  • It will mark all the files in the direction you go to.

Aki Jarvilehto from Nokia told a panel at Develop Mobile 2008 conference that they are looking to expand their Ngage games into other platforms. He said they are looking into “concepts where we use the same assets for Xbox Live Arcade or PlayStation Online.” This is interesting because it could mean that I can play a game on my phone, save my stats, then continue playing on the Xbox when I get home.

Stuart Dredge from PocketGamer was at the conference and have been reporting what’s happening at Develop Mobile. A developer told him however that “Microsoft is cautious when it comes to Xbox Live Arcade games being played in real-time against players on other platforms.”

Since no official announcements have arisen, we should label this as a rumor. Count me interested!

I just noticed the down key on the direction pad of the Nokia N95 8GB harder to press. There might be some dust or speckle in there not letting me press down normally. It started bothering me so I decided to call Nokia Warranty for repair. Follow my experience to see how Nokia treats customers asking for warranty repair. Today is Day 1.

I called the Nokia USA Care Contact Center at 1-888-NOKIA-2U (1-888-665-4228) and followed the automated menu for repair. A lady who I can understand clearly answered the phone. She requested for my name, address, email, and the IMEI number. For those who need to find this, just press *#06# on the main menu of your phone.

She told me I was still within my warranty and that I needed to read the instructions online how to send the phone to them. She gave me the Nokia USA site url and navigated me through the site with the links to follow until I get to this page: https://www.nokiausa.com/A4410046

Blank page on Nokia Repair page.

I see nothing on the page for instructions to ship the phone to them. She then tells me that the page is currently updating and that I should check later tonight. Nokia should really have at least put a note on there letting us know they are updating the page.

It’s afternoon right now, so I’ll check later to see if the page gets updated. I’ll continue to write how my experience goes. I’ve read some horror stories and some good ones, so I hope this goes well. Wish me luck.

Update: The page has been fixed.

Nokia N96 Face The Task Site Misleading? Buyer Thinks So
posted by: in Uncategorized on 07 29th, 2008 | | No Comments »

I wrote about the Limited Edition Nokia N96 from the Face The task website, and now I get an email from an angry customer thinking the the site is misleading. Rubin Simons is disappointed to find out he will not get as soon as he thought, and even angrier not getting a real estimated date. Take a look at his letters to Nokia and their response.

Excerpt from Face The Task website

Hi Nokia,

I’m pretty angry right now. To say the least, your campaign as hosted on facethetask.com is very misleading! The website states that (quote):

“Become one of the first to own the Nokia N96 multimedia computer”

and:

“This is what you’re here for. Those who get hold of the limited edition Nokia N96 will have the Nokia N96 before it’s available in their country. What are you waiting for?”

Those are literal quotes from the website. In your response you state week 35 or earlier. That means september! That is f*&*^%&^ck!n9 two months later and approximately in line with the regular release date of the Nokia N96! Why is this not stated on the facethetask.com website?

I’ve stared at that counter for two days, on and off, giddy with excitement that when the counter would hit zero, I would be able to get the N96 _now_ instead of in two months AND help red pandas in the process!

I feel a bit mislead, to put it mildly.

I don’t understand why Nokia starts such a great campaign (who doesn’t want to help the red pandas and get a great phone in return)? But then silently/secretly/weasely fails to keep its promise! In my opinion Nokia should deliver, and keep their word and send me “the Nokia N96 before it’s available in (my) country”!

I remain yours truly, a disapointed and decidedly pissed off customer.

Regards,

Rubin Simons.

And here is the response from Nokia:

Dear Rubin

Due to the nature of the limited edition Nokia N96 we can not provide you an exact time of delivery. We can guarantee that you will be one of the first to receive the device in your respective area. We are aiming to have the device shipped to you during week 35 or earlier. Please note that this time is subject to change without notice.

Best regards,

Nokia
facethetask@nokia.com

So it seems that people who bought the limited edition Nokia N96’s will be getting their phone earlier than others, but not by much. What do you think of the situation? Should Nokia have been clearer to explain when donors should expect their Limited Edition Nokia N96 on the site?

Alicia Keys was spotted using the white steel Nokia E71 in her new music video, Superwoman. Last time, she was spotted using the Nokia N81. The E71 was shown for a good 6 seconds. Good upgrade, Alicia!

<p class=”center”

The Nokia E71 appears at 1:18 to 1:24 on the video below. Note: It might not be visible in some RSS readers.

Of course, this is all a marketing plug for Nokia, but I’m surprised the Nokia E71 was showcased in a music video. I’m guessing Nokia also wants the Sidekick-loving, text-messaging addict teenagers to find out more about the business-centric Nokia E71 from the Eseries. If you haven’t read it yet, make sure to read my Nokia E71 review on the physical aspects. Thanks, Stefan, for the GReader link to GeekSugar.

Rumor: Microsoft Zune Integration With Nokia Devices
posted by: in Uncategorized on 07 27th, 2008 | | No Comments »

Nate from Zunescene reports that Nokia is working with the Microsoft Zune team on integrating their marketplace with Nokia devices. His sources tell him that it will not be an exclusive deal and can lead to other phone manufacturers. Hmm… Zune? People actually own these things?

There’s no estimated timeline when this will occur. I wonder how this will play with Nokia’s Ovi Service if it is true. The Music Store is not even available yet in many countries and last time I’ve checked, there’s no Nokia phones that run Windows Mobile.

I went to Botanical Garden in the Bronx with Sheila today and took some macro pictures using the Nokia N95 8GB. I was intimidated by most of the people inside carrying all these giant DSLRs with tripods and lenses that were longer than foot, but you know what… I’m satisfied with the pictures I took and I did not have to carry anything outside my pockets.

That’s me taking photos with the Nokia N95 8GB

You can view my macro photos on Flickr, but feel free to browse using the flash slider below. Note: It might not be visible to some RSS readers.

The pictures taken with the Nokia N95 8GB were pretty good in my opinion. The 5 megapixels Carl Zeiss lens performed well for a phone. Of course, we can’t compare the quality to a Digital DLR on enlarged printed photos, but when uploaded and shared on Flickr like what I usually do, carrying a DSLR or another standalone digital camera becomes unnecessary.

You might also want to take a look at other photo samples I’ve taken with my Nokia N95 8GB while cherry picking and during a visit to a Buddhist Monastery.

Rumor: Nokia N85 NAM Is Coming
posted by: in 2585 on 07 26th, 2008 | | No Comments »

We’ve heard about the Nokia N85 and guessed what it could be, but the leaked photos completely threw us off. Another curveball thrown at us is that it is possible to come in a North American variant. Two UAProfiles have appeared on the Nokia website showing a model Nokia N85-1 and Nokia N85-3. History have taught us that -1 is for Europe and -3 is for North America.

If true, this is great news for the North American customers giving us more phone options to use with the fast 3G internet speeds. The bad news is that the Nokia N85’s specifications is nothing to be excited about.

  • 320×240 pixels resolution display
  • Symbian 9.3 with S60 3 FP2 interface
  • GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Dual LED flash
  • 3.2 megapixels in the profile but 5mp in the leaked photos.

However, this is still a rumor, and specs can still change. Let’s hope for another good surprise about the Nokia N85 soon. If you ask me, I’d rather get a Nokia N96 in a NAM version with xenon flash and bigger battery…
