Review: Nokia 8600 Luna - My New Favorite Dumbphone
posted by: in Uncategorized on 06 30th, 2008 | | No Comments »

About 3 weeks ago i took the plunge and bought a Nokia 8600 Luna. I wasn’t keen on spending 900-1200 dollars on a Nokia 8800 Arte or Sapphire, and I got a really good deal on the Luna, so here I am really satisfied with my purchase. Read the Nokia 8600 Luna review after the break!

Nokia Luna, glowing under the glass.

Physical

First and foremost this phone has the best build quality I have ever felt, it simply oozes with quality. The fact that a large portion of the phone is made with stainless steel or smoked glass should already be an indicator of the quality of the luna. The sliding mechanism feels very tight and as a whole the phone is quite heavy. The allure of this phone also mainly comes from pulsating keypad. When on sleep mode the keypad pulses under the translucent smoked glass, giving it much of it’s aesthetic appeal (and the reason it was dubbed the Luna).

I have read some complaints about the keypad being a bit cramped, I can’t say I agree with this, but the Nokia Luna is not particularly wide so if one has larger hands it may pose a problem. The buttons feel good when pressed give just the right amount of feedback, I actually liked it better than my Nokia N95 8GB’s keys to be honest.

Features

The Nokia 8600 Luna is pretty sparse on features, as it was made to look cool, make calls, and turn heads. It has a 2 megapixel camera, a media player and a wap browser. The media player becomes a slightly moot point as there are only 128 megs of internal memory and no memory card slot. The two megapixel camera is nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done if you are looking to take a picture on the fly, its no N95 though, thats for sure. The Wap browser is your usual non smartphone browser fare(It has edge btw, sorry no 3g).

The call quality tested in NYC, Westchester and New Jersey on AT&T was excellent, this phone has one of the louder speakers I’ve heard.

Currently, between the phones I cycle through (Nokia N95-4, Blackberry Curve, SE K850i), I prefer using this for regular daily usage when the specialized features of the previously mentioned phones isn’t necessary. Its kind of refreshing to just have a phone thats a little smaller/thinner, while still having a handset that’s still a cut above the rest (and still technically able to do a lot of the functions my other phones can, just not as well).

Battery

The battery on this guy is sick. With a mix of moderate calling, light internet use, and an most power-saving options off, the luna lasts me 2 about 2-3 days without needing a charge, depending on usage. With the edge connection off I’ve had it last me 4 days with moderate calling. Why would I turn the power save options off? When power saving is on, the keypad stops pulsing after a few minutes. When off, it goes indefinitely, beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Once again, if you want a solid phone (that mainly makes calls) with a small form factor, is rare and looks awesome, this might be a good bet. Prices are going down, although it could still run you $500+. If an authorized dealer has it in stock you might just luck out on this phone, because the Arte and Sapphire being the new craze around the Nokia luxury line. Maybe I’ll pick one of those up next time =)

On my latest videolog, I’m giving a demo of SkyeQuiKey on the Nokia N95 8GB. It lets you have access to contacts, applications, and bookmarks by typing in the first few letters at the main screen. I found out about this application through Zach Epstein from SIM and BGR. Take a look at how fast it works.

Video formats: Web high quality, Mobile, Youtube.

As you can see from the video, contacts, applications, and bookmarks are only about 3 to 4 keypresses away from the main screen. SkyeQuiKey can be downloaded at SkyeStream.

Negative

What I don’t like about SkyeQuiKey is that it makes my Google Search application unusable. I can no longer search the web on my main screen using Google Search S60 application.

Nokia N95 8GB Pictures At Pick-Your-Own Cherries Farm
posted by: in Uncategorized on 06 28th, 2008 | | No Comments »

Take a look at some Nokia N95 8GB photos I took today at Lawrence Farms Orchards for “pick your own” cherries. We saw a little drizzle and some clouds, but the N95 8GB still managed to take great photos.

Cherries…. weeeeee!

Lawrence Farms Orchards was about an hour drive from New York City. I missed the cherry season last year so we made sure not to miss it this year. The farm had plenty of trees to pick from. Sheila had to pick a little faster because I was eating more cherries than putting them in the bucket! You can view the full Cherry picking Flickr set if you are unable to see the flash slideshow above.

Nokia N95 8GB vs. Nokia E71 Photos

The Nokia N95 8GB performed really well and the photos look a lot better than the current sample photos from Nokia E71. After looking at some current Nokia E71 sample photos online, I’m concerned about the purple/blue tint. It reminded me of the time I had the original firmware on the Nokia N95-1 taking pictures with blue or purple tint. I’ll explore more on this topic next week when I spend some time with the Nokia E71. Stay tuned.

Quick note: now that you have had time to play with the updated Nokia Music PC client, could you do Mark and his R&D friends a favor, and fill in the survey?

It’s short and simple - same questions as the last time.

Thanks in advance!!

Ps. is there something we could offer as a collective incentive? I mean, something like “If there are more than 250 valid responses during the next week, Tommi promises to …”

Nokia E71, Which Color Do You Like Better? White or Grey?
posted by: in Uncategorized on 06 27th, 2008 | | No Comments »

I’m interested in finding out from those who are getting the Nokia E71 what color are you picking? The release is coming really soon and it seems that both are going to come out around the same time (although a major distributor tells me the white one is coming sooner than the black one).

For me, the white one is screaming, “Come buy me, Mark!” Which one do you like?

Nokia E71 Reviews Collection
posted by: in 2079 on 06 26th, 2008 | | No Comments »

The Nokia E71 is really popular right now, so let’s take a look at what others have been saying so far. I am listing down the recent reviews available from reputable sources and a brief summary of each one.

Nokia E71 in white or grey

Paul Miller from Engadget Mobile wrote on his Nokia E71 review that even though he is spoiled by the iPhone’s touch interface, there’s more power and customizability with the S60-powered Nokia E71. The music and video playback is challenged by the screen and interface though.

Boy Genius Report claimed on their Nokia E71 review that it is the sexiest damn phone they’ve seen in a long time and even go as far as saying it is the best phone Nokia has made to date.

Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian wrote a very detailed Nokia E71 review and even said that the E71 is the iPhone’s nemesis, “using almost the identical dimensions in a totally different way, for a totally different set of users.” While disappointed with the multimedia side of the Nokia E71, there’s a lot of other things to like about.

SMS Text News’ Nokia E71 review by Ben Smith explained fans will not be impressed with the email client and media functions such as video streaming on Qik. However, they like the design, size, battery life, and the quick GPS position locking.

My-Symbian writer Michal Jerz mentioned on his Nokia E71 review the high buld quality of the device, but not impressed with video recording. in the end, the E71’s elegant design and high quality results in a warm recommendation.

Dotsisx from Symbian-Guru was surprised with the pocketable size of the E71 on her Nokia E71 review. A disadvantages she found was the autofocus function by pressing the T key, but she felt that Nokia E61 users will move to the Nokia E71i.

Thoughts

I’ve been chatting with others about the Nokia E71 and surprised at how popular it is! I think it will sell relatively well in the US especially at the starting price point. The suggested retail price for the US dealers is $499, but expect to pay around $430-$450.

Nokia to buy out Symbian OS
posted by: in 2063 on 06 25th, 2008 | | No Comments »

tagged with:,

Nokia has announced its intention to purchase the remainder of Symbian Ltd to create a non-profit Symbian foundation aimed at turning the OS into a single open source mobile platform.

Nokia will soon pay €264 million ($412 million at today’s exchange rate) for the remaining 52% of Symbian to become the sole owner.

The new Symbian Alliance will comprise Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, AT&T, LG, Samsung, STM icroelectronics, Texas Instruments, and Vodafone

AT&T is a member of the new foundation, and here’s what AT&T’s Kris Rinne has to say about Symbian:

The Symbian Foundation will reduce fragmentation in the industry and holds the promise of incorporating leading technology and the most mature software into a unified platform for the entire industry. This will create an environment that will encourage and enable developers to build compelling applications that will positively affect our customers’ lives and support AT&T in offering its differentiated services to consumers.

But now with Nokia—the No. 1 phone manufacturer in the world—in the mix, armed with several top-tier partners and an established OS that happens to be one of the best in the business, well … Google’s open source Android platform got its work cut out for it.

Each member of the alliance will get royalty-free access to Symbian (along with UIQ, a smartphone OS owned by Motorola and Sony Ericsson, and DoCoMo’s MOAP) and will make “selected components” of the new, combined OS available as open source at launch, with additional components becoming available over the next two years, Nokia said.

It also sounds like a defensive move against other OS entries into the smartphone areas such as Linux based, RIM, Apple, Microsoft, and others.

Open To Anything Goody Bag
posted by: in Uncategorized on 06 24th, 2008 | | No Comments »

I received an Open To Anything goody bag in the mail today. Open To Anything is a humorous site that features the Nokia N95 8GB. There’s a key chain, mints, pen marker, and a USB stick. Read on for the USB contents.

Open To Anything Goody Bag

The USB stick included a couple of videos from the Open To Anything website and some recommended applications. The contents are listed below.

Video #1

Video #2

Recommended Applications

The applications included in the USB stick are Joikuspot, Shozu, Twibble, Nokia Internet Radio, and Nseries DJ Mixer.

I already use the applications except the Internet Radio, so I had to install it. It’s exactly what it sounds like: radio from the internet. There are lots of listed stations to choose from and the music is streamed through your phone’s data connection. The sound quality is automatically determined by the connection speed. Yet another cool app for our our phone!
