Although we did not have that many following the conversation it was definitely a good experience. There were a few beta labs users participating as well as Nokia employees. The topic was about how Nokia Beta Labs website and feedback system should be improved and we mainly discussed about how to receive and respond to feedback. Here are the main points based on the discussion:

  • You would like to get more personal response to feedback you give.
  • You would like to get notification about how Nokia is reacting to your feedback.
  • You don’t like registering or signing in to be mandatory.
  • Taking into consideration people browsing with mobile devices is important.
  • There is a need for a variety of feedback tools - not any single one satisfies everybody

Thanks for participation!

I Won 2nd Place In Show Your S60 Smarts Contest
posted by: in Uncategorized on 05 30th, 2008 | | No Comments »

S60 announced the winners for the Show Your S60 Smarts contest, and yours truly grabbed the 2nd place for the Favorite Application category. According to the contest, I won a bluetooth headset and a gift voucher. Check out the video I made about Joikuspot that placed me second.

Briefly, Joikuspot allows you to share your internet connection from your phone with another device like laptops or internet tablets by turning the phone into a wifi access point.

thank_you_typewriter.jpg

The Nokia PC Suite team, who is now piloting the new feature Communication Center through Beta Labs, is very much impressed by your passion to test their stuff and contributing your thoughts. They asked me to thank you, on their behalf, for your overwhelmingly abundant feedback!!

Here are some concrete examples about what they have appreciated the most:

—-
A. Most inventive

By Sergey Zak:

This is simply indispensable to those of us who only use N-series PC Suite.
BUT a couple of feature wishes :
1. Please make it minimize to the System Tray.
2. Please show baloons from the tray when SMS/MMS received/failed/sent etc.
3. Allow replies/forwards from the hyperlinks in the baloons.
4. Detect and smartly sync the content.
More visions here.

Good luck! and thank you for twin resurrection

B. Best suggestions

By C Perera:

Calling functionality.

Might seem stupid, but If i’ve got my phone on a docking station, I really don’t wanna fiddle with the phone. If there is an incoming call, have a skype like popup with answer, reject, send sms. If answer is clicked, pick up the call, and switch phone to loudspeaker. Perhaps have an option to use computer speakers/mic.

And by Alex:

Somebody tell me please plz, is there any CONTACT GROUP support added in this version?

Let’s see if this stuff gets implemented ;)

Wow - I'm finding that there are a lot of new (for me at least) firmware updates available for Nokia's Eseries devices. I just updated my Nokia E51.

As always, don't forget to back-up the data on your device before upgrading.
There is no official news on the Nokia Software Update page about the slew of [...]

Thanks to RP_Guy I found out that there is a new (to me at least) firmware available for my Nokia E61i and Nokia E65
.
The update process went like a charm! I used the latest version of Nokia's software update tool to update the device. It is amazing how easy and painless this process is.

Firmware update version 20.2.005 became available to the North American Nokia N95 8GB, and sources have noted there’s not that many changes. Other than faster camera start-up, I also noticed the font has changed. It looks like it got shorter and more jagged than the old version. I took a few photo comparisons of the two versions for comparison.

Click on each picture for bigger view and better comparison. The Nokia N95 8GB on the right has the newer firmware.

The font is shorter as shown on Jaiku.

The newer font is not as smooth as the older font.

Tinier font allows more words per line as showed in Symbian-Guru mobile site.

Thoughts

I’m getting used to it, but I preferred the previous font. It was more readable in my opinion. The new font allows more text to be displayed on screen, but a few stepbacks were taken to cater it.

Did you update your Nokia N95 8GB (N95-4)? Is the font bothering you as much as it is bothering me? I’m starting to get used to it.

Niko Nyman writes about Disney’s decision to close their “promotional” community site:

When you start to think of it, it’s very different to tear down an advertisement billboard, than break down a community. While tearing down a billboard evokes images of two guys in blue overalls doing their job, pasting up the next billboard for the next advertiser, tearing down a community is more akin to images of the Chinese government forcing a city of a million people to relocate to make room for an artificial lake.

Read the whole post. Good thinking there.

This thread of thought is closely related to the problem I have been struggling with for a while: how should experimental community services be piloted by a large and established company, with an immensely valuable brand? Is it socially responsible (and does it make business-sense) to try out experimental community services, if you can’t guarantee that they will last? What if you would have multiple potential solutions: should you just pick one on the community’s behalf, of should you let the free market decide?

Here is the Catch-22. If you boldly promote your community service, and end up bulldozing the community later, your most passionate customers will end up hating you (righteously). On the other hand, if you admit on day #1 that there is a chance you will need to pull the plug later, would you have any chance of building a successful community in the first place?

I wonder.

Thoughts? (I don’t assume there are simple answers…)

I’m reviewing the Boxwave Cleartouch Crystal Screen Protector for the Nokia N95 8GB. I carry my phone in my pocket, so having a screen protector makes sure that anything else in my pocket does not scratch the screen. If you go though plenty of phones like me, you want to make sure that the screen is mint when selling it later.

Contents

The Boxwave Cleartouch crystal came with the screen protector, lint-free cloth, and an applicator (a 2×1in. hard paper).

Putting It On

It’s not as easy as it seems. I guarantee you that it will take you more than one try.

You really need to make sure there are no dust or small particles on the adhesive AND the screen. It creates bubbles that will not go away. It is worse if dust or tiny specks got caught in the adhesive side of the screen protector because it is harder to remove.

Fortunately, the adhesive on the Cleartouch is washable and reusable. I had to wash mine because dust got caught in there and I had to remove it. Once it dried, I tried again and no bubbles appeared.

Display

Without the bubbles, you won’t realize the screen protector is there. There is also another version called the Anti-Glare, but I opted for clarity instead. The one I purchased for the Nokia N95 8GB was also a perfect fit, covering the entire surface of the screen.

Protection

I purchased it for peace of mind knowing the real screen won’t get scratched. When it’s time to sell my phone to replace for a newer and better one, I’ll take off the screen protector and take pictures of the beautiful undamaged 2.8 inch display on the Nokia N95 8GB.

Service

I’m happy with the product, but really disappointed with the service. I ordered on Boxwave on the 19th with 2nd Day delivery. I emailed them on the 24th that I have not received it yet. I have not received any email replies yet, but received the package on the 27th. Update: I received a reply this afternoon shortly after this post was published that I will be given refund of the shipping cost.

Verdict

I had to wait at least a week for a second day delivery and I have not received a reply about my complaint. I would say stay away from Boxwave and try a screen protector from another company.

Let us know what screen protector you are using and your experience so far.

As discussed earlier, we have now moved Nokia Text Messenger and Nokia Location Tagger to Beta Labs Archive. This means that you can continue using them, but Nokia is not further developing these as standalone apps, nor fixing any bugs.

The good news is that you can expect to get similar functionality integrated as part of standard Nokia offering in the future. Thanks for your valuable comments!!

Ps. I think we should add Location Tagger to the Graduates list too, as location tagging functionality has been productized and integrated as part of Nokia device offering.
