Weekend Nokia N96 Blog Review
posted by: nitrio in Nokia Mobile Tech on 03 31st, 2008 | | No Comments »

Yes. the title can be something abnormal to Nokia N96 Blog. I am writing this post just to let you know some things that are happening all around this Blog, as I said it is a review/news/posted newsletter (this last characterization is the best….I think…).

The first thing is that Nokia N96 Blog is surpassing the visits of PhoneReport, if you don’t know, PhoneReport is our brother blog, such as MyLovelyGadgets, but PhoneReport is better known all around the mobile world, it has approximately 1 year and is mainly done by Meraj (my big friend).

At the beginning of Nokia N96’s blog, we thought it couldn’t be easy to attract visitors to a blog when the main theme is just one mobile phone, but Meraj insisted and I finished agreeing with his arguments. Now it seems He was totally right, and let me remember you that the visits we are having are mainly organic.

I am not just posting to tell about this “surpassement” of PhoneReport, but also to thank you (all visitors and feed subscribers), because this growing would be impossible without you. At now our Alexa Rank is 675.605, again increasing as time goes by.

Meraj can’t appear online in this month, cause his internet limit have been reached (he is in South Africa), bu Tuesday we will have new posts and more news.

We have in our website some free ad spaces that are free and you can buy them for an unlimited time with the price we have on the contact form. You, advertiser, remember that we have more than 1000 pages views daily, a Nice Alexa ranking, more than 100 feed subscribers and Nokia N96 will be released in August. The prices will grow if our popularity grows as Nokia N96’s fame increases.

groupinterviewadvertisersandwebsites.jpg

Maybe, Tuesday we will update our Wordpress Blog to the version 2.5, final, the blog will not go down as this is just a fast update.

Here is another RSS button…also the BIGGEST of the world.

Rumor: The Nokia N96 With Xenon Flash
posted by: nitrio in Nokia Mobile Tech on 03 30th, 2008 | | No Comments »

The rumor for today is that the Nokia N96 will have Xenon flash similar to the Nokia N82. Xenon technology is a lot brighter than current LED flash which results in a lot better picture quality at night or indoors with poor lighting. Take a look at my previous Nokia N82 photo samples. I think this rumor sounds too good to be true, but I’m all for it.

n96-xenon
Nokia N96 with Xenon Flash… photoshopped.

Daedalus85 from Esato forums says

Our Nokia rep told me… the (Nokia) N96 hasn’t been given the complete green light yet… And the delays are due to them adding (at the last minute) a Xenon flash…

If this rumor is true, does it mean the current dual LED’s initially planned are staying and a Xenon flash will be added? Or will it be totally replaced? The bad thing about removing the LED’s is that Xenon light can’t be simultaneously on while recording video. This feature is missed by previous Nokia N93 owners.

Another theory can be that the xenon flash will be implemented to a Nokia N96 variation instead and probably get called Nokia N96i. It was not an official statement, so I don’t believe it yet.

N96 with a Xenon flash?!
posted by: nitrio in Nokia Mobile Tech on 03 30th, 2008 | | No Comments »

Nokia N96 camera and kickstand

This certainly comes as a surprise to me, and we don’t know if it’s another rumour, but according to Daedalus85 at Esato forums, a Nokia representative told him that the upcoming N96 might have a little addition, which is the highly awaited Xenon flash.

I strongly doubt it, especially if the pre-production models have been reviewed and showcased at various exhibitions, and the full specifications have been released.

Xenon flash isn’t the only thing missing, we need a better battery, higher resolution, and few improvements on the camera itself.

Nokia N96 reviewed in english!
posted by: nitrio in Nokia Mobile Tech on 03 28th, 2008 | | No Comments »

Eldar has had his mega-review of the upcoming jewel translated, of which in a previous post I chose my favourites shots.

Nokia N96 picture review

I will present my views on the phone by the weekend, but I leave you with an excerpt of the interesting article:

Interestingly, over a year ago Nokia started to enhance its product portfolio not only by varying styles, but also hardware platform underpinning their solutions. The Nokia N95 and its follow-ups built upon the TI OMAP chip, while the N96 takes advantage of STMicroelectronics’s Nomadik. So when comparing these two phones, their similarities don’t go beyond physical aspects, since other things, like functionality and hardware, are quite different.

Is the N96 a mass-market solution? No. Then, is it heavily specialized, aiming at one particular niche? No. It is rather somewhere in between. This phone will see moderate sales, although the fuss around it will easily shadow its modest numbers.”

Review: Nokia N95 8GB Look And Feel
posted by: nitrio in Nokia Mobile Tech on 03 27th, 2008 | | No Comments »

In first of a few series, I’ll be giving a review of the Nokia N95 8GB concentrating on its look and feel. There are a few changes on this model compared to the other Nokia N95 variations, more importantly the bigger 2.8 inch flushed screen, bigger battery, and the shiny black color. In the end, I think it looks great and a lot better looking than the older Nokia N95 variations.

I won’t talk about using the Nokia N95 8GB yet. Let’s think about the curious costumer who just glances by and sees the Nokia N95 8GB. First impressions determines what phone catches my attention and appearance plays a major role.

Dimensions. The dimensions are 99mm x 53mm x 21mm. That doesn’t sound too bad, but let’s compare it to other popular phones, the Nokia N82 and Apple iPhone 8GB. The Nokia N95 8GB is the thickest of the three but also the shortest.

  • Apple iPhone 8GB: 115mm x 61mm x 11.6mm
  • Nokia N82: 112mm x 50.2mm x 17.3mm

Width Nokia N95 8GB
Apple iPhone 8gb, Nokia N82, and Nokia N95 8GB side by side

Let’s start the tour of the Nokia N95 8GB.

Front

In a closed position, the first thing you notice is the glossy 2.8 inch screen. It is flushed with the rest of the surface which is shiny. The problem with this is that lighting can reflect off the screen and may obstruct your view. It can also be a fingerprint magnet. I personally like the gloss and shine.

On top of the screen are the earpiece, secondary camera, and a light sensor which automatically adjusts display and keypad brightness according to the surrounding.

Below the screen are some buttons for calling, ending calls, and navigating around the phone. There also dedicated buttons to the Menu and the Multimedia Menu. I’ll explain more about its uses in the next post on using the Nokia N95 8GB. For now, let’s stay to the look and feel aspects.

Nokia N95 8GB vs Nokia N95-3
Nokia N95 8GB versus Nokia N95 NAM buttons

The buttons are quite easy to press and provide great tactile feedback. You know which buttons you are pressing without looking at the N95 8GB. This is handy for those who like to use the phone while driving. The contrasting chrome with black buttons look great, too.

Dual Slide. The Nokia N95 8GB is more than a slider phone. Sliding both ways shows either the numeric keypad or media playback buttons. The original Nokia N95 received a lot of complaints on the poor build quality on the older Nokia N95-1, but that is now fixed. There are however, small amount of people who complain about the slider, so just hope that you are not unlucky.

Back

The surface has a “sticky” rubber surface which makes it feel comfortable in the hands. Don’t worry about the phone slipping through.

Nokia N95 8GB Back
The back of the Nokia N95 8GB.

Camera. The main feature of the back is the 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens. LED flash is right next to the lens and you might notice the absence of a camera cover. Be careful not to scratch the camera lens too much, or it might negatively affect the image quality of the photos.

Battery. Opening the battery cover shows off the 1200mah battery. Removing the battery provides access to the SIM card slot. Out of all the phones I’ve used, all the versions of Nokia N95 have provided the easiest and fastest way to remove and replace the battery and SIM card. No need for pins or paperclips.

Sides

Placed on each side are the built-in stereo speakers. The location is perfect for talking on the phone with speakerphones. I have no complaints about the volume.

On the left side are the infrared port and a 3.5mm jack for headset and the TV-out cable that lets you view your screen on a TV or monitor with composite video and RCA inputs. I haven’t used infrared yet, and I honestly think it is useless.

On the right side are the volume controls, the Gallery button, and the camera shoot button. The camera button works like other point-and-shoots. You press halfway to focus, then fully to take the picture. I like that you can really feel if the button is half-pressed or fully pressed. I did not like the camera button on the Nokia N82.

Bottom

The bottom of the Nokia N95 8GB consists of port for the charger, mini-usb connector for transferring files with the computer, and the microphone. The future models should really get rid of the charger port and just let the phones be able to charge on the mini-usb.

The microphone’s location should be acknowledged by anyone taking videos. If you are right-handed, it is easy to cover up the microphone while taking videos. Watch out for that.

Top

There’s just the power button on the top. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Look and Feel Final Thoughts

The Nokia N95 8GB looks great. Just put it next to the older Nokia N95 model, and you’ll agree without a doubt how much more beautiful it is. A big minus, however, is a missing micro-SD card slot. Transferring files will be limited to bluetooth or USB transfer.

I’ll finish this part off by saying that I agree with Steve Litchfield’s review claiming the Nokia N95 8GB is the best phone ever made. I’ll explain more in an upcoming post when I review about using the Nokia N95 8GB. Make sure to subscribe to the Nokia Blog feed.

The Problem was Adtool Peel Away Ads
posted by: nitrio in Nokia Mobile Tech on 03 26th, 2008 | | No Comments »

We were recently facing some problems in opening our webpage from Internet Explorer 7. We though the problem was related to the server and it was corrected. But, today morning I saw the error appearing again in my Internet explorer window (i don’t use regularly IE), so it was saying this:

“IE cannot open nokian96.net/…”

But the problem wasn’t related to nokian96.net page, but Adtool Peel Away ads, that are something like a second page included in the main.

I think now it is everything ok, as we removed Adtool Ads.

We also like to say to all for you that our Alexa Rank changed, we are now at 752.780 place.

Custódio, from Oportunidades de Dinheiro,a portuguese blog about money, recommended some new contact forms. So, we added them to this blog. Check this one:

Are you constantly checking your North American Nokia N95 for firmware updates on Nokia Software Update? You are not the only one. I’ll provide you the product codes list for the Nokia N95-3, and perhaps one day one of those codes will show a shiny new firmware. You can check updates based on Nokia product codes and use my list.

iphoto-20071003-221626

Nokia’s firmware updates checks your product code to see if your firmware is up to date. I don’t know why, but sometimes only certain codes get the updates first. Here are the full product code list for the Nokia N95 NAM, also known as the Nokia N95-3.

  • #0534861: NAM / US
  • #0552415: NAM / US
  • #0551733: NAM / LTA
  • #0551734: NAM / LTA
  • #0552432: NAM / Brazil
  • #0552434: NAM / Brazil

Changing product codes are useful if you want a different language pack or update firmware when the current product code does not have the firmware update yet. Read the similar instructions on the Nokia N95-1 for Updating Firmware, Debranding, and/or Change Language Pack, but use the codes on this page only for the Nokia N95-3.

So when will we get our updates, Nokia? It’s been a while since I wrote the Nokia N95-3 review.

The Nokia 6220 Classic recently passed FCC approval, but this phone completely flew right by me. I did not know this phone had 5 megapixels, xenon flash, GPS, and the latest S60 version. It’s got some improvements over the Nokia N96, N78, and N82 so I’m confused why it’s not part of the Nseries?

Nokia 6220 Classic

The Nokia 6220 classic showed up on the FCC pages yesterday. Here are the documents for your viewing including the user manual.

For taking pictures, I’ll assume that it will take just as good photos as the Nokia N82 which is part of the Nseries (hence the N letter) featuring the first Nokia with xenon flash. Check how much better the xenon flash on the Nokia N82 versus LED flash on the Nokia N95. The Nokia N96 doesn’t even have Xenon flash. The Nokia 6220 classic also even improves over the Nokia N82 by having built-in geotagging. If a GPS signal exists, all the photos taken by the Nokia 6220 will have its location embedded within the photo’s exif data.

For videos, the Nokia 6220 is capable of shooting VGA (640×480) at 30 frames per second, just like the Nokia N95, N93, N82, and other Nseries phones that I’ve used on my videoblogs.

The Nokia 6220 classic even sports a TV-out, something the Nokia N81 doesn’t have.

So why is the Nokia 6220 Classic not part of the Nseries? It’s got pretty good specifications on paper. Is it because it can’t connect to wifi? I think that’s the only important missing component on the phone.

Since the Nokia 6220 Classic just passed FCC aproval, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing these in stores. It costs around 325 Euros before subsidies and taxes. Will people buy it? Did you know about this phone? This one definitely snuck through me.
